Dairy Industry

Our Beautiful Friends

The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined. If beef is your idea of “real food for real people,” you’d better live real close to a real good hospital. —Neal D. Farmers Welcome Fonterra Vote

Farmers and industry groups alike are lauding the vote approving the Trading Among Farmers scheme. The final stage of Fonterra’s capital restructuring programme was given the seal of approval by shareholders yesterday, passing with nearly 90% support. Farmers gathered around the country on Tuesday for final voting and to hear the results, which the co-op is calling a landmark day in its history. Federated Farmers is leading the chorus of industry groups praising the result. Dairy Chairman Lachlan McKenzie says the restructuring will reassure dairy farmers now facing Emissions Trading Scheme costs. But business commentator Bernard Hickey says while the decision will ease the burden on Fonterra’s balance sheet, it may not bring the outside capital the co-op hopes. Several hundred European dairy farmers on Monday staged a protest in Brussels calling for fair milk prices as European agriculture ministers were meeting. About a dozen tractors with farmers mostly from Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands made their way to the Schuman roundabout in the heart of the European quarter. According to a background note on the ministerial meeting, farm ministers were due to discuss a report produced by the EU’s ‘High Level Group on Milk. The meeting was due to finish after lunch. The.EU expert group last month drummed up seven recommendations to stabilise the dairy market and ensure a fair income for producers. The experts last month called on the Commission to draft either guidelines or a legislative proposal covering contractual relations between milk producers and milk processors. Formal written contracts regarding the price, volume and timing of deliveries of raw milk and the duration of contracts must be further developed, they say. Member states could make use of these contracts compulsory, the group stresses. Such ‘contractualisation’ at EU level between producers of agricultural commodities and industry is not currently possible. Read more at: www.euractiv.com

Off Grid Vegan Community – Independant & Unaddicted to Society

I seek to start an off grid vegan community that is 95% self reliant and not addicted to main stream society. This commune will be simple and self sufficient without needing very much outside support from the government, the utility companies, schools, gas companies, etc. How can this be? First of all we don’t need addictive foods. We have worked our way into consuming only whole vegan foods and are totally off of wheat, dairy, sugar, meat and other destructive foods. Also, we are not utilizing the utility companies and are not dependant on them either! We don’t need to play by the general public’s rules because we don’t live near them. Additionally, we don’t pay into their kitty and support their addictions – the utility companies, the insurance companies, the medical industry, war, welfare, social security, criminal justice & prisons, and all the rest of the idiocy they have created. We make our own solar panels, save our own water in cisterns, connect to the internet via satellite, build natural houses using straw bale – cob or earthen, grow our own food organically, heat our houses safely and do things in a communal way. Scotland Tonight – Milk price cuts

Cuts to the milk price paid to farmers is “the final nail in the coffin”, warns a union boss. Dozens of Scottish dairy farmers attended a summit in London on Wednesday warning the UK government that cuts to milk prices could drive them out of business. The reductions of up to 2p per litre from August follow cuts for many dairy farmers imposed in the spring, and the NFU is warning that producing a litre of milk now costs many farmers significantly more than what they are paid for it. The farming industry is also preparing for the worst harvest in decades because of the wet weather. Speaking on Scotland Tonight NFU Scotland’s Allan Bowie said that the milk price cut is the final straw for farmers. He said: “I think there’s a huge pent up anger and frustration that this price cut come August is the final nail in the coffin and it’s not often farmers come out to demonstrate. “What we heard today was 2500 people who took the time having milked their cows in the morning to come into London and just explain the dire straits they are in.” He added: “The whole supply chain needs to understand why we need a fair price for the milk here.” Also on Wednesday’s programme was The Scottish Farmer’s Alasdair Fletcher and Sandy Ramsay from Scottish Agricultural College. Alasdair Fletcher said: “The fundamental problem is the contracts that the farmers have with their milk buyers. These contracts are basically a disgrace and have been since day one. “It’s like going into a shop to buy a
